It’s been a year since our introduction to the atmospheric horror and isolation of End of Abyss.

During last week’s Summer Game Fest, we learned that the third-person isometric title is coming to the Epic Games Store on Oct. 1.

We also got a better look at the game.
 

A new trailer from developer Section 9 Interactive shows your character initiating a mission by riding down into the depths of some unknown structure on a platform, gun gripped in two hands.

The scenes show more locations in the eerie world of End of Abyss, including steel walkways and massive areas that require a grappling hook to traverse. 

We also get another look at the single-player game’s cool little scanner, a device that sweeps a room with multiple laser rays, a bit reminiscent of the opening scene of Aliens and its use of search drones. 

The real stars of the trailer, though, are the horrific creatures found inside the abandoned facility that your character Cel explores.

There are bipedal monstrosities, the hand-like, spider-esque creature seen in the first demo of the game, fleshy, massive centipedes, and many-eyed fish creatures. 

The same echoing voice from the first trailer is translated as the scenes flash by:

“We will end it. This abyss.”

“Do you wonder?”

“Why they sent us here?”

There’s more storyline hinted at this time around, with flashes of other teammates, and some greater mystery meant to be solved.

In the depths of a mysterious underground compound, a mission to investigate disturbances of unknown origin spirals into a harrowing descent through a broken and abandoned world, according to the Epic Games Store description. Play as the young combat technician, Cel, as she uncovers the truth behind the facility’s derelict areas and confronts the monstrous creatures that roam them.

Cel will be able to upgrade her gear and navigate branching paths to uncover hidden areas using her Scanner and the tools she unlocks along her journey.

End of Abyss is clearly meant to be an intimate, creeping experience, filled with as much mystery as it is monstrosity.

We managed to catch up with Section 9 Interactive co-founder Mattias Ottvall as the post Summer Game Fest Play Days wrapped up this week to see how things were progressing with the game.

"We are now focused on getting the best experience possible and making sure we are taking in testing feedback to ensure the variation in gameplay really resonates with people,” he said. “Seeing how players interact with the map is really cool, and that people are enjoying the exploration aspect has been really important to us."
