World of Warships has Dropped Anchor at Epic Games!

To mark the occasion, we’ve prepared some handy pointers to help rookie sailors navigate the dangerous waters of 20th-century naval warfare.
The first concept a trainee captain should become familiar with is ship classes. Currently in World of Warships, there are four: destroyers, cruisers, battleships, and aircraft carriers — each with their own strengths, weaknesses, goals, and nuances. Choose the one that resonates with you most and roll with it!
- Destroyers are the small, nimble scouts that, though not armed with the heaviest main battery, are capable of harassing flanks, spotting for the team, and dishing out devastating damage to small and big ships alike using their torpedo armament.
- Cruisers come in many shapes and sizes — from lightly armored AA cruisers to imposing battlecruisers — but they all have one thing in common: versatility. A wide range of consumables, together with their more varied armament make them the perfect support ships.
- Battleships speak for themselves. They’re the biggest, meanest warships with the most powerful guns and armor — but they’re slow and stick out like a sore thumb. A single well-placed salvo from a battleship can ruin a cruiser’s day in a split second.
- Aircraft Carriers bring an element of verticality to the game with their three types of attack aircraft squadrons employing bombs, torpedoes, or rockets to slow the advance of the enemy fleet. As a commander, you take control of one individual squadron at a time in third person, while making sure your ship is not exposed to enemy fire.
There are 11 nations represented in the game whose navies had a significant historical presence in the era spanning the First and Second World Wars. Each nation brings different playstyles to the table, depending on the class and tech tree branch chosen. A good place to start for a beginner is with the US Navy or Imperial Japanese Navy, since generally speaking they are good all-rounders.
Now that you’ve chosen your steed, it’s time to take in some important combat tricks to stay afloat.
- In order to make the most of your firepower on most ships, it’s necessary to turn far enough to the side so that your aft turrets have a clear shot on target. On the flip side, your ship is most vulnerable when the full side of your hull (broadside) is exposed to enemy fire. Not only are you a bigger target, but you’re also presenting a flat surface for Armor Piercing (AP) shells to easily punch through your plating and wreak havoc on the fragile Citadel deep inside your ship. Keep this in mind when you’re searching for a target: if you see a full broadside, load AP and fire away! If the ship angles away, there’s a good chance your AP shells will ricochet — time to load High Explosive (HE)!
- Sinking ships isn’t everything! While it feels good to see a ship detonate by your hand, remember that World of Warships is a team-based game. Always be on the lookout for priority targets such as destroyer rushing your carrier with torpedoes or a ship capturing your base. Moreover, don’t forget that Key Points are a thing, and capturing them will bring your team that much closer to victory. Be a team player — play the cap!
- World of Warships offers a variety of customizations in the form of camouflages and signal flags. But, while pretty, these things aren’t just for show. Each camouflage and flag grants your ship different combat or economic bonuses, and can ultimately help you speed up your advance up your chosen tech tree and reach the higher tiers faster.
