WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers, a dark fantasy Soulslike from developer Leenzee, allows you to mix-and-match different weapons and abilities. You can fine-tune your perks, turning Wuchang into an unstoppable force that feels at home in the thick of the fray—or you can play it safe by bombarding foes with magical powers from a distance.

Our WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers magic build guide discusses the latter, with tips for creating a viable setup for spellcasters. Below, we discuss the ideal weapons, Benedictions, and accessories that you should equip.

Best weapon type for magic users

If you want to be a magic user in WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers, then your go-to weapon type should be one-handed swords. The skill tree of this weapon (which we’ll explore in more depth later on) has several nodes that further empower your Magic and Feathering stats. You can either equip another one-handed sword in your second armament slot or try a different weapon type, such as spears or longswords, to complement your playstyle.

As far as one-handed swords go, the Darkfrost Edge is a good choice early on since you can acquire it at the Lightzen Temple courtyard. Later, after defeating the Great Centipede boss, you’ll obtain the Astral Blade, which has high Spellpower to boost your abilities. Then, once you’ve defeated the final boss, you can use the Plumed Grace for your New Game Plus run.

Additionally, if you own the WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers Deluxe Upgrade Pack, you’ll be able to wield Watcher’s Gaze. It has lower Spellpower compared to the Astral Blade, but it has a higher Magic stat for its own skills.

Best Discipline skills and perks

To have the best magic build in WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers, you must activate the proper nodes or perks in the Impetus Repository skill tree. The good news is that you can freely reset and refund any points or materials that you’ve used so you can continue to fine-tune your build.

Generally speaking, you should start by (and continue) increasing core stats like Health and Stamina. Next, you should focus on nodes that increase your Magic stat since most early-game spells deal Magic damage. Eventually, you should also increase your Feathering stat once you begin using spells that deal Feathering damage.

In any case, here are the perks that you should unlock in the right-hand side of the skill tree for one-handed swords:

  • Mastery - Swift Blade: These nodes increase your one-handed sword mastery. You need Red Feather materials to activate these.
  • Perk - Biding Time: Lets you gain Skyborn Might stacks passively if you’re wielding a one-handed sword.
  • Perk - Windforce: Consume a stack of Skyborn Might to quickly do a charged attack.
  • Discipline - Slicing Zephyr and Variant node: Use this to do a spinning maneuver that hits enemies around you and sends them flying backward.
  • Stats: Magic stat nodes followed by Feathering stat nodes.

And here are the perks on the left-hand side that you should unlock:

  • Alacrity, Unbroken Focus, and nearby nodes: Improves the status buildup of various elemental spells.
  • Alteration, Rapid Temperance, Fury of the Skyborn, and nearby nodes: These unlock additional Acupoints and Stone Needles for Temperance buffs.
  • Skyborn Call III and nearby nodes: These increase your Magic stat and Feathering stat.

Best spells for offense and defense

If you want to be a pure spellcaster in WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers, then you need to choose the right abilities for combat encounters. Here are our suggestions for defensive and utility spells:

  • Divine Ward: Purchased from the Giant Panda NPC for 3x Bamboo Shoots. It temporarily reduces the damage that you take.
  • Divine Blessing: Rewarded by the Red-Clad Lady in Avian Marsh if you agree with her sentiments. This creates a circle of healing on the ground.
  • Ethereal Form: Found in a courtyard that’s filled with enemies in Zhenwu Temple. This allows you to automatically dodge a single hit while it’s active.

And these are the top choices for offensive spells:

  • Infernal Flames: Dropped by a masked enemy in the village near Shu Sanctum. Casting this spell creates a fiery projectile that tracks your target.
  • Echo of Lu Bingzhang: Dropped by the boss in Shu Sanctum. This deals decent Feathering-type damage. It also has the Alacrity trait, which causes you to automatically dodge if you get hit while casting.
  • Plume Vortex: Found on a corpse along the path that leads to the boss in Avian Dwelling. This wind-based spell has a knockback effect and the Alacrity trait.

Best Benedictions for your weapons

For our WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers best magic build guide, we opted for Benediction runes with effects that complement your Skyborn Might gains from combo attacks and dodging, as well as the Biding Time perk for one-handed weapons. Here are our picks for the Oath slot:

  • Bu - Skyborn Ward: This is the first Benediction that you acquire since it’s dropped by the Tang Palace Maid miniboss in Buddha Cliffs. It reduces the damage you take whenever you gain Skyborn Might.
  • Sheng - Burning Might: Greatly complements your use of Infernal Flames due to the rapid Burn status buildup. It’s found at the back of the tower on the way to Snowfall Palace.

We chose the following for the Memory slot:

  • Sheng - Lasting Alacrity: This extends the duration of your damage avoidance whenever you trigger a spell’s Alacrity effect. You can get it by interacting with the Mystery Gate at Tang Palace and replying with this answer: “The winged ascension.”
  • Sheng - Skyborn Rejuvenation: This makes Skyborn Might grant life leech, which means you heal up when you hit your foes. It’s found near the end of the campaign in the upper caverns of the Bo Capital.

Lastly, there’s only one ideal pick for the Wisdom slot:

  • Wei - Skyborn Magic: This increases your spell damage whenever you gain Skyborn Might. To get it, you have to cross the stone bridge in Narrow Stretch, then head all the way to the end of the scorched path.

Best Temperance Needle effects

Bone Needles are obtained by unlocking their respective nodes in the skill tree. As for Stone Needles, these are dropped by the Inner Demon invaders and bosses that you face. Here are our recommendations for our WUCHANG: Fallen Feathers magic build:

  • Bone Needle - Magic: Boosts your spell damage.
  • Shadow Stone Needle - Magic: Slightly increases your weapon’s Magic control.
  • Shadow Stone Needle - Feathering: Slightly increases your weapon’s Feathering control.
  • Root Stone Needle - Status: Increases the status buildup from Tempering.
  • Everlight Stone Needle - Continuity: Increases the duration of the Tempering effect.

Best Jade Pendants for spellcasters

Finally, let’s talk about the best Jade Pendants that you can use if you want to be a pure spellcaster:

  • Sun Pendant (Mandatory): Increases the potency of spells. This comes from a chest in a pond in Tang Palace Ruins, as shown in the above image. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to obtain it until much later in the campaign.
  • Lifesteal Pendant (Mandatory): Heals you whenever you defeat an enemy. This can be purchased from Tao Qing once you give him the All-Tree Jade Cylinder dropped by the Reborn Treant - Soulwood boss.
  • Fiend-Felling Pendant (Optional): This accessory is great for dealing damage against larger monsters. You can buy it from Tao Qing after giving him the Jade Cicada dropped by Gluttonous Monstrosity - Lu Hongliu in Narrow Stretch.
  • Crane Pendant (Optional): You can find this at the top of the eerie chamber in Avian Dwelling. It increases the potency of spells if you’re below a certain health threshold.
