Like all gacha games, Zenless Zone Zero puts our teams at the mercy of chance, at least to some extent. Pulling on a banner is like drawing a lottery ticket, hoping to score the best characters in the game, but there’s a high chance of failure before you reach success. That said, it’s important to have as many chances as possible to reach that success with these so-called pulls. Many of ZZZ’s strongest and most efficient characters are S-rank, meaning they might take up to 90 pulls to get. Even then, you might not get the character advertised on the banner.

Have no fear. ZZZ includes over 100 free pulls and plenty of Polychrome, the currency you need to exchange for more pulls, in its permanent rewards. There will always be new ways to get another chance at a banner, which is why we made this guide. Here’s every free pull you can get from Zenless Zone Zero, plus a couple of tips on how to get more.

Types of pulls

Before we get into how to get every free pull, we need to dig into what every pull actually means. We’re talking about every currency that you can use on ZZZ’s banners:
  • Master Tape—Standard banner currency
  • Encrypted Master Tape—Limited-time banner currency
  • Boopon—Bangboo banner currency
How valuable these are depends on what you’re looking for at any given moment. Encrypted Master Tapes are typically the most valuable because they’re used for limited-time characters and weapons that you won’t be able to get until their banners run again. Encrypted Master Tapes typically only come from login events, so you’re often forced to spend Polychrome to get more. Meanwhile, you can get Master Tapes from many places outside of login events, including Inter-Knot Level rewards and character promotions. Boopons mostly come from leveling, and you can get them almost as freely as Master Tapes.

These are the main methods for earning Master Tapes, Encrypted Master Tapes, and Boopons:
  • Road to Proxy Greatness
  • Inter-Knot Level
  • Battle Pass
  • Hollow Zero
  • Character
  • Signal Shop
  • Login Events

Road to Proxy Greatness

Road to Proxy Greatness is a permanent event that appears in the event log early in the game near the banners and other limited-time events. It’s the main source of your starter Master Tapes and Boopons.

Here’s the full list of rewards you get as you raise your Inter-Knot Level:
  • Inter-Knot Level 5: 10 Master Tapes, 10 Boopon
  • Inter-Knot Level 15: 10 Master Tapes, 10 Boopon
  • Inter-Knot Level 20: 10 Master Tapes, 15 Boopon
  • Inter-Knot Level 25: 10 Master Tapes, 10 Boopon
  • Inter-Knot Level 30: 1600 Polychroma, 20 Boopon
By Inter-Knot Level 30, you should have received 40 Master Tapes, 55 Boopons, and 1600 Polychrome from Road to Proxy Greatness. The 1600 Polychrome should be enough for another 10 pull of your choice, whether it’s from the standard or limited-time banner.

Inter-Knot Level

In ZZZ, you gain rewards from raising your Inter-Knot Level at each step of the way. Each time you level up, you’ll be able to claim rewards like XP materials, Polychrome, and Dennys (common currency for buying most items). This includes Master Tapes and Boopons, which you can use on banners. There is a long, long list of rewards that go all the way up to Inter-Knot Level 60. If you make it all the way to the end, you should have 31 Master Tapes, 15 Boopons, and 1000 Polychrome.

Battle Pass
  • 10 Master Tapes and Boopons per season
The New Eridu City Fund—ZZZ’s take on the battle pass concept—awards up to 10 Master Tapes and Boopons per season. Each season typically lasts as long as the current patch. After the season ends, the rewards reset. You can see the countdown timer for the current season at the bottom left corner of the screen with the option to upgrade the battle pass on the right. You generally unlock a Master Tape every 10 levels. Meanwhile, the Boopons can be found in-between those thresholds. Complete daily, weekly, and seasonal tasks to gain points on your battle pass and unlock these pulls.

If you buy the upgraded New Eridu City Fund, you’ll have access to even more resources as you level up the battle pass. Rewards include the more coveted Encrypted Master Tapes, additional leveling materials, and resources that make it easier to progress and pull for your favorite characters.

Hollow Zero
  • Five Boopons and one Master tape per week
Hollow Zero, one of ZZZ’s special modes, has its own License Levels and Bounty Commissions that lead to more rewards. There are four Bounty Commissions during any given week. If you complete all of them, then you get five Boopons and one Master Tape.

Your License Level goes up as you complete Bounty Commissions, but they only unlock Boopons and no Master Tapes, so it won’t help much if you’re trying to gain new characters or W-Engines. On the other hand, it will help you find your perfect Bangboo. By the time you reach Level 60, you should have earned 20 Boopons. (For Honkai: Star Rail players, think of it like the Simulated Universe but with its own separate level.)

Characters
  • Three Master Tapes per character
Each character will give you at least three Master Tapes if you fully level them up. It isn’t much, but when you fully level up an entire team of three characters, that’s already nine Master Tapes all together, which is nearly enough for a 10 pull.

You receive one Master Tape for every other time you raise an Agent’s level cap. For example, you’ll receive one Master Tape once you raise your character’s level cap past Level 20. You also get Master Tapes for Level 40 and Level 60, so you should have three Master Tapes by the end.  If you aren’t sure when you’ll receive the Master Tape, you can click the little tape icon in the upper corner of your character’s profile to see their leveling milestones.

Signal Shop
  • Five Master Tapes and five Encrypted Master Tapes per month
Every time you pull on the Signal Search standard and limited-time event banners, you accumulate two kinds of currency: Residual Signal and Fading Signal. The Boopon banner accumulates an alternate currency, Bangbucks. These currencies can buy Master Tapes, Encrypter Master Tapes, and Boopon from the Signal Shop. You might want to save your Residual Signal for more important items like five-star weapons or copies of four-star characters. However, you can exchange Fading Signal for up to five Master Tapes and five Encrypted Master Tapes per month, and up to five Boopons for a discounted rate of 20 Bangbucks per month.

Make sure you save your Residual Signal, Fading Signal, and Bangbucks for these rewards. Sure, you can spend them on items to level up your characters’ skills and such, but those are items you can get from grinding challenges. You can’t do the same with Tapes or Boopons.

Login Events

Before launch, HoYoverse advertised on social media that new players could claim up to 100 free pulls and 80 Boopons if they pre-registered and regularly played during the first few weeks. However, many of those pulls were limited-time rewards attached to login events.

Login events, like the one pictured above, typically offer at least one 10 pull for the standard or limited-time banner. You just need to log in multiple days in a row to claim all of the rewards. They also usually last multiple weeks, so even if you aren’t able to log in seven days in a row, you may still be able to claim all of the rewards over a couple of weeks.

While the login events from launch will be expired by the time you read this, there’s no doubt that HoYoverse will introduce a new login event at some point. Just be sure to stay connected on social media to see when the next promotion is or regularly log in to see if a new notice pops up.

These likely won’t be the only ways to earn free pulls in the future. In HoYoverse games like Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail, you are able to earn more of them through limited-time events that vary depending on what vibe the developers are going for at the time. At the very least, you can count on these few constants as staple ways to earn your Tapes.
