Everything we know about Battlefield 6: Maps, modes, weapons, and more

Battlefield 6 is one of the most anticipated games in series history, and it's a true return to form, bringing back Battlefield's trademark class-based gameplay and large-scale destruction.

While Battlefield 6 will feel familiar to longtime fans, Battlefield Studios has also introduced some new twists to the FPS formula that make the game more approachable for newcomers. With a cinematic single player campaign, an expansive multiplayer suite, and an upcoming battle royale mode, there's a lot to look forward to this time out. Here's everything we know so far about Battlefield 6.

Closed Weapon playlists

One of the biggest changes: Battlefield 6 allows you to use any weapon with any of its four classes.

With this new system, your chosen class no longer dictates your playstyle. Gadgets are still tied to specific classes, so the Engineer class is still best for taking out vehicles with its launchers and mines, for instance. But if you're a Recon player, there's nothing stopping you from taking the front lines with assault rifles and shotguns.

However, Battlefield Studios has introduced Closed Weapon playlists to Battlefield 6 for purists who prefer the old ways. Closed Weapon versions of Conquest, Rush, and other modes will restrict weapons to certain classes just like the previous games. There aren't any additional rewards tied to either playstyle, so you're free to choose between the traditional class-based experience or more freeform loadouts.

Campaign details

After skipping singleplayer in Battlefield 2042, the campaign is back in Battlefield 6. Centered around a conflict between NATO and the villainous PMC Pax Armata, Battlefield 6's campaign will send you on missions all across the globe.

The campaign has shades of the classic Battlefield: Bad Company stories, focusing on a tight-knit squad of likable soldiers instead of large-scale conflicts with nameless grunts. Those gigantic setpiece battles are still a core part of Battlefield 6's campaign, but you'll spend the whole story with the Dagger 13 unit from start to finish.

Multiplayer maps and modes

Multiplayer has always been Battlefield's bread and butter, and Battlefield 6 features some of the best maps in the series. The beta gave players a glimpse of some of the game's coolest locales, and there are even more coming at launch and beyond.

Battlefield 6's maps allow for a mixture of intense close-quarters combat and vehicular dominance across wide-open plains. Some maps are better suited for infantry than vehicles (and vice versa), so every match will feel unique.

Siege of Cairo is already a fan-favorite with its cramped alleyways and frenetic indoor skirmishes. Liberation Peak, on the other hand, is a massive mountain range with long sightlines for snipers and plenty of space for tanks and jets to dominate the battlefield.

Maps can be played in any game mode, and they'll change depending on your selected playlist. Conquest matches will utilize the entirety of maps like Liberation Peak, while Rush forces players into smaller pockets of the map best suited for objective-based gameplay.

Weapon customization and progression

Progression is a core part of the Battlefield multiplayer experience, and you'll unlock a ton of cool attachments and cosmetics as you level up in Battlefield 6. The divisive Plus System from Battlefield 2042 (which allowed players to change attachments on-the-fly even after spawning) is gone, leaving Battlefield 6 with a more traditional weapon customization experience.

Each weapon has a maximum number of attachment points at its disposal, and each attachment has a listed point value. As long as you stay within the attachment point limit, you're free to put anything you want on your weapon.

You have your usual set of suppressors, stocks, and scopes, but Battlefield 6 takes things even further with unique attachments like Soft Point ammunition that boosts headshot damage. The best attachments have the highest point costs, of course, so you'll have to make some trade offs in order to craft the perfect build.

There are also weapon cosmetics like camo patterns and charms, but Battlefield Studios has promised to keep things grounded and refrain from adding wacky skins that don't fit the mil-sim theme. Things can always change after launch, but for now, Battlefield 6 is committed to its realistic visual style.

Battle Royale

The upcoming Battle Royale mode is the biggest question mark for Battlefield 6

DICE introduced a Battle Royale mode called Firestorm in Battlefield V, but it wasn't a huge hit among players. There was also the extraction-based Hazard Zone experiment in Battlefield 2042, but that also fell out of favor with players over time.

Battlefield 6's Battle Royale isn't a secret by any means, but Battlefield Studios is keeping things under wraps leading up to launch. It's currently undergoing testing in Battlefield Labs—the player-focused test server that led to most of Battlefield 6's changes—so the development team is placing a huge emphasis on player feedback.

Battlefield Studios has confirmed that the Battle Royale mode will feature the franchise's core tenets like destruction, vehicles, and even class gadgets and abilities. Earning kills and completing objectives during a match will net you XP that unlocks more class abilities, like the Assault class being able to equip armor plates more quickly.

There's a lot to look forward to in Battlefield 6, and the game will only grow after launch with updates adding more maps, modes, and weapons into the fray. If the seasonal content drops are as good as the base game, then Battlefield fans are in for a great time.

Battlefield 6 is available for pre-purchase on the Epic Games Store.
