Arc Raiders
There’s no genre better suited for playing with friends than an extraction shooter. In Arc Raiders, you run through murderbot-filled ruins, scavenging scrap and hoping to survive with a backpack full of loot. Without a friend or two watching your back, you’re likely to be stalked and robbed by other players. You need friends, if only so they can remind you of all the times they’ve dragged you to safety from the Rust Belt.
However, we’d be remiss not to mention that Arc Raiders has produced some strange alchemy in the most backstabbing genre there is. There are servers filled with friendly players who will help strangers in need and gang up on those who attempt to steal. It is somehow the most social anti-social game you’ll play. You might even make more friends while playing it.
Split Fiction
You: A handsome, smart, and witty person who enjoys reading books with exploding spaceships on the cover.
Your friend: Reads fantasy.
There’s nothing quite like embracing a fandom and sharing it with (or shouting about it to) a friend. Split Fiction’s co-op gameplay is set in science fiction and fantasy worlds where two writers get dragged into their own stories and must work together to escape. So, you can argue whether Kirk is better than Gandalf or if Princess Leia is a better commander than Daenerys Targaryen while battling through your favorite genres. Get to know each other and finally understand why they love dragons so much, all while playing one of the best co-op games of all time.
Battlefield 6
Battlefield 6 has the biggest fights of the series. Buildings collapse, jets zoom overhead, and everything everywhere explodes. In the chaos of all-out-war, hopping on voice comms with your squad is the best way to survive—really, it’s the only way. With four people per squad, it makes the madness manageable, and help is one loud scream into a microphone away. Even if you're only mere chums before the action starts, you’ll become best friends by the end of the lengthy set-pieces.
Pro-tip: Make sure you trust the player with the spawn beacon, because there’s nothing worse than dying and respawning in the corner of a cold, dark warehouse where your most cowardly friend is waiting out the war.
LEGO Voyagers
Time to get a little romantic? You’d be surprised at how well Lego Voyagers, the two-player co-op adventure set in a Lego world where you play as the bricks, works as a game for a date. The world is gorgeous and colorful, a perfect place to relax in. The puzzles are silly and gentle, perfect for getting to know someone without high stakes. And, in the end, you might just click!
Satisfactory
The long-term goal of Satisfactory is to create an automated, resource-gathering, world-spanning production line: A factory that is truly satisfying. If that sounds like a lot of work for one person, don’t worry. You can bring some friends to help you Construct, Automate, Explore, and Exploit. Trust us, it’s way more fun that way.
Up to four players can join a server, with squads often dividing roles among themselves. One person might be great at exploring deep into the alien world, unlocking progression and battling the native wildlife, while another might focus on building and optimizing the base. Then there’s Tom, who just likes to drive trucks forever. All are valid. Coordination is key to taming this wild world and turning it into ingots, parts, and fuel.
Operation: Tango
Communication is key, so we’re told. We weren’t listening. We were too busy playing the online co-op only spy caper, Operation: Tango. You and your partner need to work together to save the world, and that’s going to require constant chatter, cooperation, and patience.
Two players play a co-operative movie-style spy game, with one player sneaking about on the ground, and the other player remotely hacking the security systems in their partner’s way. This needs constant chatter, with the field agent relaying all the information back to the hacker, who works on scanning, unlocking, and all that cool spy stuff.
Among Us
A cavalcade of betrayal, lying, and clandestine murder, there’s no other game that screams “togetherness” like Among Us. You need at least four players (and up to 15) in this online game where crewmates do jobs while secret murderers plot amongst themselves to kill and stab. It could be you. It could be your best friend, who once promised to never, ever poke you with a knife. You will learn just how deceitful your friends can be when the accusations fly.
It tests friendships, creates bonds between strangers, and asks questions, those questions being mostly about who killed whom and where.
Chivalry 2
Most people think of chivalrous behavior as being somewhat old-fashioned and romantic in nature, such as holding a door open, or moving from a seat to allow someone to sit down. It’s an act of self-sacrifice, putting your own comfort aside so that someone else feels better.
We need to be clear: That won’t be the case with Chivalry 2. Your friends will be very surprised when you invite them to play, expecting you to be a gentleman, only to watch you chop off someone’s leg and use that leg as a club. It is a comedically violent multiplayer game where the mud and blood of medieval times won’t be able to hide the insanity in your eyes. You might have fewer squadmates after, to be honest.
