S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl
Alternate histories rarely disappoint as video game settings, but there’s something about S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2’s look at a post-meltdown warzone of bloodsuckers, snorks, and pseudodogs that’s caught the public’s attention. It’s probably the fact that many of us playing know of the real-life disastrous event that inspired such mutations, and that the Zone is a real place that’s been twisted into a nuclear fairytale.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard
A decade after Dragon Age: Inquisition, BioWare’s high-fantasy RPG series returns just like it always does—completely different from any game in the franchise before it. Just looking at its gorgeous graphics reveals a more cartoonish aesthetic, complemented by gameplay that favors real-time action more than ever. Not ready to commit to another epic adventure through Thedas just yet? You can still go ahead and fine-tune (and later import) your hero with the free Character Creator.
God of War and God of War Ragnarök
While its initial trilogy of PlayStation games cemented God of War as a premier name in the history of action games on their own, the move from Mount Olympus to the Nine Realms improved—even matured—that greatness. The series’ more modern reinvention delivers a trilogy’s worth of action and character development in just two games. Kratos and Atreus venture forth on adventures that not only pit them against icons of Norse mythology, but that also evolve their relationship as father and son.
Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
There was no shortage of good—even great—Spider-Man video games before Insomniac brought us the Marvel’s Spider-Man series. But they sure did perfect that formula, didn’t they? While the amazing open-world exploration, spectacular stories, and sensational web-swinging that define these titles are certainly nothing new, many would argue these games represent the absolute best version of each. The result: some of the greatest superhero releases of all time.
Red Dead Redemption
Saddle up, pardner. Took longer than a tumbleweed crossin’ Texas for this ace-high classic Western to mosey onto PC from consoles, but turns out that few months of waitin’ you did’s gonna save ya a fistful of dollars. Red Dead Redemption on PC features a whole mess of new fixins that’ll have you playin’ till the cows come home, from 4K resolution to super ultrawide monitor support. Ain’t no purtier way to walk into the sunset.
And what about those “indie gems?"

Coal Supper did more than just boost our egos with what they named their playable British sketch comedy show—they also have us thanking them for one of the most whimsical, straight-up delightful games of the past year. As a traveling salesman, visit the town of Barnsworth, take on a few odd jobs, and proceed to laugh the Best Laughs of 2024, according to the Dope Indie Game Awards. It’s also nominated for seven BAFTA Game Awards.
Sorry We're Closed
Many evils reside within Sorry We’re Closed, and so does some Resident Evil. The game wears its ‘90s survival-horror influences on its sleeve, from fixed camera angles to optional tank controls for purists (i.e., masochists). But at the same time, it absolutely stands out on its own with a daring art style, and it’s not so beholden to nostalgia that you can’t switch to first person to fire your weapon (or keep to a sane control scheme).
Timberborn
In a world where humanity drove itself to extinction, beavers have assumed the role of dominant mammal species—and they have indeed been busy. Timberborn elevates these woodworkers of the wild from the best dam builders on Earth to the best damn builders in history. It’s up to you to guide a team of lumberpunks in a city-building game defined by ingenious animals, vertical architecture, water physics, terraforming, and log-loads of personality.
Creaks
The pure aesthetics of this game—wow! That art style; that hand-painted animation; that incredible sound design: all joined by a charming mix of platforming and puzzle solving. The unnamed protagonist might as well be a literal avatar for you, captivated by a pure mix of genuine curiosity and absolute dread. Exactly what kind of demented world have you entered on the other side of your wall? Only one way to find out…
Roboquest
Sometimes you just wanna shoot stuff. You want it fast. You want it furious. You want it…maybe looking like an awesome cartoon you wish had aired when you were growing up? Critics lauded Roboquest’s tight controls and roguelite elements, and there’s even a co-op mode if you need some help shooting through the randomly generated environments.
Is there more?
